The Athletic put out an exclusive yesterday which claims that Chelsea are strongly considering selling Marc Cucurella.

Today, their Chelsea reported Simon Johnson took a deeper look at the situation, and weighed up whether it would be a good idea for the Blues to part ways with the curly haired full back.

Chelsea’s strongest reasons to sell Cucurella remain financial

There are certainly some arguments in favour of the move, mainly from a practical, financial point of view.

Johnson points out that the full back “will not be any higher than it is now.” That’s partly because he’s about to turn 27, so age wise his value is about to plateau. Plus, Chelsea have three years of him left on their contract, so value is maximised in that way too.

Chelsea have a “very strong bargaining position” to get a “large sum.” That doesn’t mean it’s the right idea in footballing terms, but it is convincing from a purely business point of view.

Cucurella has made it pretty clear that he’s interested in leaving. A lot will come down to new manager Xabi Alonso and how much he wants to keep his countryman around. We’d imagine those talks will be taking place very soon.

In other news…

Simon Phillips has been looking at two midfielders Chelsea could target this summer and whether they make sense as options for the Blues.
