Calum McFarlane has provided an update on Jesse Derry and Robert Sanchez following Chelsea‘s defeat to Nottingham Forest. The duo were forced to come off either side of half-time after suffering injuries at Stamford Bridge on Monday evening.
Shortly before the break, Derry clashed heads with Zach Abbott, winning the Blues a penalty. After a lengthy stoppage in play, the 18-year-old winger was stretchered off the pitch, bringing an unfortunate end to his first start for Chelsea.
Midway through the second half, Sanchez collided with Morgan Gibbs-White. He and the Forest midfielder were forced to come off, each leaving the field draped in bandages.
Speaking to reporters, McFarlane said: “We’re hearing positive signs from Jesse and Rob. I hope the Forest players are okay as well. He performed well on the pitch but there are more important things to focus on right now.”

The defeat to Forest at Stamford Bridge on Monday afternoon marked the Blues’ sixth successive defeat in the Premier League. In an interview with Sky Sports, McFarlane said: “Really disappointing results and performance. Agree that in the first 15 minutes we weren’t good enough.
“We gave two goals away, which you can’t do against a side like Nottingham Forest, who are a very good side but also fighting for their lives. I do think that set the tone.”
Also speaking to Sky Sports, Jamie Carragher described Chelsea as ‘broken’. The former Liverpool defender said: “It’s shocking and it comes from the top. There’s five or six really top players on the pitch today and they’ve been beaten by Nottingham Forest’s B team.

“Less than 12 months ago, they were taking PSG to the cleaners. There’s no connection between the players and the staff, the players and the fans.
“In some ways, it’s a good thing because it tells you that football isn’t just all about spending money, buying players and this revolving door. It’s about creating togetherness and there’s nothing there. They look like a broken football club right now.”
Carragher added: “Vitor Pereira has done a brilliant job – he did similar at Wolves when he first came in. I probably thought European football was a problem initially, balancing it with staying in the Premier League, but now it has brought them onto the cusp of something really special.”
