Debate is currently raging about what Chelsea’s summer plans should be, especially when it comes to the future of key players and regular starters like Marc Cucurella.
Simon Johnson’s piece for the Athletic makes it clear there are plenty of positives, considering the full back is about to be 28 and is approaching the peak of his value as a player. If the club are ever looking to cash in, this is the moment to do it, financially speaking.
Cucurella replacement may be a short term downgrade

But it’s not all positives – in fact there are some very obvious negatives, as Johnson points out. He correctly notes that “one of the main criticisms levelled at Chelsea is their lack of leaders and characters in the dressing room,” and that “Cucurella certainly qualifies as both.”
You can’t bemoan your team’s lack of experience then sell off its most experienced players.
Cucurella is now “one of the best left backs in the Premier League,” and Chelsea would likely not be replacing him with an immediate upgrade. It would certainly be a risk for a team looking to make a marked improvement.
In other news…
There will be major changes to Chelsea’s squad this summer, and two of the key roles the Blues want to fill have already been named.
Chelsea interest in a rising French goalkeeper has been dismissed by sources today.
